BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) _ A crew doing paving work on Interstate 95 in Stamford accidently damaged the highway, forcing emergency repairs that resulted in a 19-mile backup during the morning commute.

The Department of Transportation says a contractor was milling a bridge deck at about 4:30 a.m Tuesday when workers accidentally damaged a metal joint.

Crews spent about four hours repairing the bridge, closing three of the four lanes of southbound traffic in the area.

The backup extended more than 19-miles between exits 27 in Bridgeport and 9 in Stamford, resulting in delays of more than two hours for some commuters.

There also were delays reported on the Merritt Parkway as commuters looked for an alternative route into Stamford and New York.
