State transportation officials are holding six public hearings on proposed increases to rail and bus fares.
The first hearing is set for noon today at New Britain City Hall, followed by hearings in Stamford Tuesday, New Haven Wednesday, Hartford Thursday, Meriden Friday and Waterbury Aug. 30. The increases are part of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s budget balancing plan.
Rail fares on Metro-North’s New Haven Line and Shoreline East would go up more than 16 percent on or after Nov. 1. A one-way fare from New Haven to Manhattan on Metro-North would increase from $18.50 to $21.50 during peak hours and from $14 to $16.25 during non-peak hours.
Connecticut Transit bus fares would go up 10 percent on Nov. 1. The base local bus fare would increase from $1.25 to $1.35.
Southington State Senator Joe Markley also wants people opposed to the New Britain-to-Hartford busway project to speak up. He says the $60 million per mile pricetag is too much for taxpayers to bear.
